The short answer
An index is not the return of the average stock or of any particular investor's portfolio. It measures a specified basket of securities under a specified weighting rule.
Large companies have more influence in a capitalization-weighted index. A portfolio can lag a rising index if it holds those companies at lower weights, favors different sectors, keeps cash, or measures its return in another currency or under another convention.
That gap does not by itself mean the portfolio is poor, the index is misleading or the market is about to fall. The first task is to make the comparison consistent. The second is to identify which holdings contributed how many percentage points.
What does an index actually measure?
An index is a basket of selected securities. The S&P 500 includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. It is a broad gauge of large U.S. companies, not every U.S. stock, the global market or the average investor's experience.
Membership is only part of the construction. The weight assigned to each company matters just as much.
The S&P 500 is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization. As the value of a company's publicly available shares grows, its index weight rises. A 1% move in a large constituent therefore matters much more than the same move in a small constituent.
The simplest contribution estimate is:
Approximate index contribution = beginning weight x security return
If a security begins with an 8% index weight and rises 10%, it contributes roughly 0.80 percentage points. The same return at a 0.2% weight contributes about 0.02 points. The return is identical, but the index effect is about 40 times larger.
This shortcut does not fully capture daily weight drift, dividends, corporate actions or index-divisor changes. It still explains the first mechanism behind a gap between the headline index and a portfolio.
Why do the top 10 holdings matter?
In State Street's August 6, 2026 S&P 500 table, the top 10 securities represented 38.15% of the index. The top three, Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft, accounted for 20.52%.
“Top 10 securities” is the accurate description. Alphabet's Class A and Class C shares appear as separate rows, so the table does not represent 10 distinct companies.
Information technology carried a 37.64% sector weight on the same date. Moves in technology and the largest companies can therefore have a much greater effect on the S&P 500 than on a portfolio spread more evenly across sectors.
Concentration works in both directions. Large stocks lift the index when they rise and magnify the damage when they fall. Their high weight alone does not tell us which direction comes next.
The same 500 companies, two different results
We do not need two unrelated groups of stocks to isolate the effect of weighting. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index uses the same companies as the S&P 500 and resets each company to approximately 0.2% at every quarterly rebalance.
The first half of 2026 shows how the same constituents can tell different stories under different weights. The figures below are total returns in U.S. dollars and assume reinvested distributions.

I derived the first-quarter figures from S&P's reported first-half and second-quarter returns using geometric linking. Rounding can create a small difference from a separately published quarterly figure.
Equal weight led by about 5 points in the first quarter. Large-company influence strengthened in the second quarter, when the capitalization-weighted index led by 3.81 points. Equal weight still finished the full first half 1.92 points ahead.
The latest cross-check, dated August 5, 2026, showed a 15.82% year-to-date total return for equal weight and 13.58% for the S&P 500. That was a 2.24-point equal-weight lead.
These observations do not say that equal weight always wins or that large companies always lead. They show that market leadership can reverse within a short period. A portfolio's result relative to the index can also look very different when the measurement window changes.
Six reasons a portfolio can lag
The portfolio-index gap can be separated into six layers.
1. Lower weights in the biggest winners
A portfolio may consider an 8% single-company weight too risky and cap the position at 2%. If the stock rises sharply, the portfolio will lag the index. If it falls, the same cap can protect the portfolio.
The lag alone does not make the position limit wrong. It shows that the portfolio chose a different concentration profile.
For the same security universe, a simplified comparison is:
Approximate portfolio-index gap = sum of [(portfolio weight - index weight) x security return]
With no trades, taxes, cash flows or fees, that calculation shows how much each weight difference contributed to the overall gap.
2. Sector, size and style differences
A portfolio with less technology and more financials, industrials or health care may trail the S&P 500 during technology-led periods. Allocations to small and midsize companies create another difference from a large-cap index.
A portfolio tilted toward lower-valuation companies can also react differently from an index dominated by fast-growing businesses. Saying that both portfolios own equities does not make them comparable.
3. Rebalancing and position limits
A capitalization-weighted index allows a rising stock to become a larger position without a mechanical sale. An equal-weight strategy instead trims relative winners and adds to laggards at each quarterly reset.
That rule can help when leadership reverses and hurt when a strong trend continues. More trading can also produce higher costs and taxes. Equal weight is therefore a distinct strategy, not simply a more neutral version of the same index.
4. Cash, fees and tracking difference
Cash drags on return in a rising market. Fund expenses, transaction costs and imperfect replication can also cause an investment product to trail its index.
Investor.gov notes that sampling, fees, trading costs and tracking error can keep an index fund from matching its benchmark precisely. An index cannot be purchased directly, so some implementation difference can exist between the measure and the product that tracks it.
5. Currency and timing
A U.S. dollar S&P 500 return is not the same measure as a portfolio return reported in Turkish lira. Currency moves, hedging, taxes and cash flows can change the result.
Dates must also match. Comparing one asset's Friday close with another asset's intraday Monday value is not a clean test. If cash entered or left the portfolio during the period, a simple beginning-to-ending calculation may misstate the investor's performance.
6. Price return versus total return
A price index measures only price changes. A total-return index assumes that dividends and other income are reinvested.
Comparing a portfolio that leaves dividends in cash with a total-return index creates a mismatch. So does comparing an ETF price chart with an index's total-return series. Return conventions need to match before the performance gap becomes meaningful.
Why can missing a few winners matter so much?
The distribution of stock returns is not symmetrical. A stock can lose no more than the amount invested, while a major winner can compound many times over. A small set of companies can therefore produce a large share of long-run market wealth.
In Hendrik Bessembinder's U.S. stock sample beginning in 1926, the top 1,000 stocks accounted for all net wealth creation. The remaining 96% collectively matched the wealth created by one-month Treasury bills.
That finding needs a strict boundary. It does not say that today's top 10 companies will remain the winners. It does not prove that current index concentration is safe or dangerous. It explains why completely missing a small number of exceptional winners can produce a large gap from the broad market over time.
Is concentration a warning?
Concentration is a useful diagnostic. It tells us how sensitive the headline index is to a few companies and sectors. If the index rises while equal weight, the median stock and the number of advancing stocks weaken, market participation has narrowed.
“Participation is narrow” is not the same claim as “the index is about to fall.”
S&P Dow Jones Indices calculated that the 10 largest companies represented almost 40% of the index by mid-2025, a level last seen in the mid-1960s. Most of the 1965 leaders later lost substantial weight. The index still rose over the long run because later winners entered and became larger.
A 2026 Financial Analysts Journal article, “The Fallacy of Concentration,” offers a stronger counterargument. Its authors argue that concentration alone does not show that the market has become riskier or that investors must rebalance.
Another CFA Institute Research Foundation study highlights a different limitation. Indexes are not perfectly passive because additions and deletions can create trading and price pressure. Read together, the two arguments support a more careful conclusion: capitalization weighting can be a powerful, low-intervention design, but its construction rules still affect the outcome.
Why equal weight is not the “real market”
Equal weight reduces the dominance of the largest companies and provides a useful lens on market participation. It is not a perfect measure of the average stock for three reasons.
First, it resets each company to approximately 0.2% every quarter. That is a mechanical rule that trims relative winners and adds to relative laggards.
Second, it gives smaller companies and different sectors more influence than the capitalization-weighted index. S&P's own description identifies smaller-size, value and anti-momentum tilts.
Third, more frequent trading can create costs and taxes. FINRA also warns that alternatively weighted products may have higher turnover and expenses.
Equal weight is therefore a useful diagnostic, not an automatic investment answer.
A five-step comparison
If a portfolio lags while the index rises, work through the comparison in this order.
1. Choose an appropriate benchmark
What country, company size, sector mix and risk level does the portfolio target? A global or small-company portfolio can be mismatched with the S&P 500 from the start.
2. Match the return definition
Use the same start and end dates, the same currency and the same total-return convention. Separate dividends, fees, taxes and cash flows.
3. Calculate the largest contributions
Place the index's and portfolio's largest beginning weights side by side. Multiply each weight by the period return. Start by measuring how much the five largest differences contributed to the total gap.
4. Separate sector, size and style
Did the gap come from one stock, a sector such as technology, the small-large company mix, or a value-growth preference? Owning the same names does not mean carrying the same exposure.
5. Ask whether the difference matches the objective
If the portfolio was built to track the index closely, an unexplained difference is a problem. If it was designed for lower concentration, more cash or a different risk target, the difference may be a natural result of the design.
Conclusion
There is no contradiction between a rising index and a lagging portfolio. The contradiction lies in assuming that both hold the same securities at the same weights and measure return the same way.
On August 6, 2026, the S&P 500's top 10 securities represented 38.15% of the index and the top three represented 20.52%. In that structure, moves in a few very large companies can change the headline return substantially.
The first two quarters of 2026 also show that the direction of the gap can reverse. Equal weight led by about 5 points in Q1, while capitalization weight led by 3.81 points in Q2. Neither was the single “true market.” They were two measures assigning different weights to the same companies.
The first question should not be “Why is the portfolio bad?” A better question is: Which security, at which beginning weight, contributed how many percentage points, and does the comparison use the same currency, dates and total-return convention?
Once that attribution is complete, the source of the lag becomes visible. Only then can an investor distinguish an error from a cost, a measurement mismatch or a deliberate risk choice.

The main comparison uses U.S. dollar total returns with reinvested distributions. I derived the first-quarter results from the first-half and second-quarter figures using (1 + first-half return) / (1 + second-quarter return) - 1. The package's calculations/reproduce.py file reproduces the arithmetic.
The top-10 sum uses the securities in State Street's August 6 index table. Alphabet's two share classes appear separately, so the result is a security-level rather than a company-level sum. Weights can change daily.
The equal-weight index is not the median stock return. It carries quarterly rebalancing, smaller-company, value, anti-momentum and sector effects. An index also differs from an investment product because fees, trading, taxes and tracking error can affect investor returns.
