In the decision announced on October 4 by OPEC, the oil producers’ organization, the seven countries participating in the production adjustment will keep November output at September levels. The first question of the new week is how well the economy can withstand high energy costs. Today's U.S. services report will help clarify demand and price pressure after Friday's weak employment report.
Bitcoin is above its earlier confirmation band this morning, while Ethereum remains below its own. I do not read that divergence as strength across the entire market. The new week in U.S. stocks has yet to begin; Friday's closing prices and this morning's crypto trades describe different conditions.
Key takeaways
- Holding production steady provides no additional supply support for companies hoping for relief in energy prices. Oil's path depends on more than the production decision: transportation security and the strength of consumption are also part of the calculation.
- Weak economic data can work in two directions. Expectations of lower interest rates may support stocks, while fewer orders can hurt companies' sales. Today's services report requires us to distinguish between these two effects.
What changed since yesterday?
- Yesterday's Bitcoin price was around $84,940; today it is around $85,543. Moving above the old band changes the condition to watch: holding above it now matters more than the initial crossing.
What happened?
- OPEC's October 4 statement says Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman will keep November production at September levels. The statement by the separate monitoring committee on the same day identifies attacks on energy infrastructure and disruptions to maritime routes as risks to supply security. An announced production plan and oil actually reaching consumers are different things.
- Friday's U.S. report showed slower hiring. Today's services data will provide new information on whether that pattern is spreading through a broader part of the economy. I will read new orders alongside the prices businesses pay.
Market levels
U.S. technology stocks
- $QQQ, which tracks the Nasdaq 100, closed Friday at $749.49. I am watching the upper end of Friday's $747.63-$754.51 range as a nearby boundary for continued buying in the new week. One session's low does not establish lasting support on its own.
- Semiconductor ETF $SMH closed Friday at $630.63. It was above the $618-$620 resistance area in financial analyst Tunç Şatıroğlu's (@tuncsatiroglu) October 1 assessment. His $600 stop-loss point should not be treated as technical support.
Gold and silver
- Spot gold is around $4,135 per ounce this morning. That price does not meet the $4,250 reclaim condition in Şatıroğlu's September 28 assessment. $4,000 is the analyst's downside target, not confirmed support. Gold fund $GLD closed Friday at around $380.20.
- Spot silver is around $61 per ounce, below the $63 threshold. The recovery condition in the same assessment is a daily close above $63; $56 is a downside target, not support. Silver fund $SLV closed Friday at around $54.74.
Crypto
- Bitcoin is around $85,543 this morning. It is above the $85,100-$85,200 band in Şatıroğlu's September 26 assessment, but that price alone does not confirm the strong move and follow-through he required. $82,700 is the downside support in the same assessment.
- Ethereum is around $2,707, below its earlier $2,730-$2,740 confirmation area. If that area is cleared, the analyst's next boundary is $2,810; $2,630 is the support level that needs to hold on the downside. Bitcoin's move does not fulfill Ethereum's separate condition.
Red flags
- A new disruption to energy infrastructure or transportation routes could reduce supply even if the announced production plan remains unchanged. In that scenario, the oil price alone is not enough; where fuel can be delivered and how quickly also matters.
- Weakening services orders would warn of pressure on company revenues. If high price pressure accompanies that weakness, waiting for lower interest rates will not resolve the market's growth problem by itself.
- Crypto moving above a threshold and then falling back below it could mean the initial move has not continued. In that reversal, treating an old analyst assessment as an automatic buy signal would be a mistake.
Calendar
- October 5, 17:00 TRT: U.S. ISM services report. New orders, employment and prices paid matter for today's distinction between growth and inflation.
- October 7, 21:00 TRT: Minutes of the Fed's September meeting. They will provide a new source for comparing today's data with policymakers' assessments of growth and prices.
My analysis
Today I am watching energy costs alongside company demand. The production group's decision not to plan another increase for November does not reduce uncertainty on the supply side. Even so, strong services orders and easing price pressure could leave companies better able to withstand high energy costs. Deterioration in both orders and the price measure would create a more difficult balance.
I will first watch the direction of Treasury yields after the release, then how technology stocks close the new session. In crypto, I want to see prices hold above the band after crossing it and the move spread to other assets. Before those conditions align, it is too early to infer broad relief from a few positive signals in separate markets. Where a price stands matters, but so does the demand needed to keep it there.
